In the different history terms there was a city
which is called Karin, Karna, Garin, Kornoi,
Kalai and Karnak in the place where Erzurum is
located in now. Again in the same historical
terms a city which called Erzen, Erzeron was
located in west of Erzurum plain. In the time
when II Teodosious was Bizans Empire (M.S.
408-450), a castle was built in a hill where is
supreme to Karin city, to protect city from the
attacks which come from Persia. The city which
is included in this castle called
“Teodosiopolis”. Karin and Erzen where is in the
west of Erzurum plain are different places.
This city which is called Teodosipolis in Bizans
sources, is called Kalikala in Arab sources.
Kalikala means “Kali’s gift” in Arabic.
According to Belazuri (Arab historian) city took
this name from its founder. Kali is wife of a
man who conquerors the city. Kali was built a
city and called Kalikala name. In 1048, Erzen
(Arze) is restrained by Selcuklu Turks who
entered Bizans solids to conquer East Anatolia.
After Erzen became a ruin, the poepla who remain
back, took shelter in Kalikala and they called
the city Erzen.
The city where is became ruin called Kara Erzen
by Turks. By the time this name is changed to
Kara Arza, Kara Arz and in the end Karaz by
people. Erzi-i Rum, Erzen-ir Rum, Arz-ý Rum
names are used in some textures about Erzurum,
in epitaphs and in some money. The name “Erzurum
“ was produced by using these names in people
language.
